Tell it Your Way!

December 22, 2007 / by htargett

I enjoy the people I meet on Blogster because most are very independent thinking people.  And these same thinking people tell it as they see it whether it wins the popularity contest or not.

As necessary as some compromise with society may be, one of it’s disadvantages is the overemphasis placed on conforming to the mold of average.  We have our nose bashing experiences every day as society tries to whip us in line.  We are conditioned by what other people say, think or do.

If we become oversensitive to these influences, it is very easy for us to melt into the crowd and lose our individual personality and identity completely.  We become swallowed up by the society or institution of which we become a part.

Ironically, we often suppress the ideas and thoughts that well up within us, only to find later that we must accept them as the thought of someone else because a more individualistic person dared to advance the ideas and win their acceptance by society.

A man I admire wrote:  “A man must not be so conditioned that he grows, lives, works, marries, retires and dies according to a formula fashioned for him by either family, environment or institution.  If he does he develops chloroformed brain condition.  He walks through life in a somnambulistic state, and all about him takes on a “musty attic” atmosphere.  He is neither alive nor dead.  In the end, he might as well rest under the epitaph:  “Died at age 20; buried at age 60.””

On my gravestone I want:  “Died at 100, but didn’t stop until he was 110”

Have a great day,

Hugh

I'm still pondering your post. Me thinks we're more individualistic than we're given credit for--certainly opinionated! It's the social creature in us that makes us appear to be conformists. I don't know--I'll work on this thought.[WINK][COOL]

Yes "opinionated" caused by our conditioning by family, institutions, media etc., unfortunately without much individual thought. There are exceptions, those prove the rule, and you are one of them I suspect.[SMILE]

Next stop New Hampshire for the presidential express. Wouldn't it be nice if instead of campagin speeches that echo into the wind, a voice is heard to say ... "What a beautiful and majestic setting for the truth." ... Just a thought
